A Clean Space is a Happy Space!

6/7/2019 (Permalink)

When work gets busy, the last thing you think about is whether the floors have been vacuumed or the HVAC filters replaced, but making sure that your workspace and office are clean can actually help your workplace become more productive. Check out the list below for reasons why keeping the workplace clean is important.

  1. Make a Good First Impression

When a customer walks into your business, they will definitely notice if you have kept up with the maintenance of your building. Water damage spots and dirty carpets make a horrible first impression on customers looking to do business with you. They will likely judge you based on what they first see when they enter your office, so make sure floors are clean, desks are tidy, and spills are quickly cleaned up.

  1. Boost Focus

If you have papers strewn about your desk and you don’t know where to find things, it becomes difficult to focus on your work. A tidy desk makes it easier to focus on what needs to get done and where you have left important pieces of your work.

  1. Keep Your Employees Healthy

If your employees don’t enjoy the area they work in, they likely won’t want to stick around. Spending 8 hours a day in a place with water stains on the floor and mold growing in the air vents can make anyone feel sick. Investing in a good air filter and making sure that it is properly maintained will go a long way in making your employees feel happier and healthier. Keeping walls, ceilings, and floors clean is an important part of ensuring your employees are taken care of.

Deodorizing

6/7/2019 (Permalink)

Nothing is worse than having a huge meeting coming up with an important client, and you just can’t get rid of a foul smell. Maybe an employee left their tuna sandwich out, the office dog had an accident on the floor, or someone started smoking in a non-smoking room. Whatever the case is, we can get rid of that stench and make sure that your commercial building is as fresh as a daisy when anyone comes in.

Why not just light a candle and cover up the smell? Well, just like smelling gas can indicate a problem with a car, a foul smell in a building can hint at some bigger problems. A musty odor can indicate that you may have a mold problem, or a smoky smell even though you haven’t had a fire is definitely something to worry about. Additionally, not treating the smell allows it to cling to walls and fabric which makes it even harder to get out later when you ultimately do have to treat it. We have technicians certified to remediate smoke and soot damage, get rid of mold, deal with biohazard messes, and much more, so wherever that smell is coming from, we can make sure to take care of it properly.

Whatever that smell may be, SERVPRO® of River Oaks can be onsite to clean it up before it begins to drive your customers away. Call us today at 713-666-9222.

Commercial Fires

6/7/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know sometimes commercial fires can cause enough smoke damage to your building that you may need to file an insurance claim? Fire is an insidious agent that sends out more than just flames. As the soot and smoke are thrown into the air, they may cast a large shadow as they settle again onto and into the surrounding buildings. That is how the damage can catch you unawares.

Extreme Vapors May Damage Your Building’s Interior

Heavy smoke that lingers in the air can often carry with it toxic particles, vapors, and gases that can expand with the heat from the flames. These are some of the most common areas that may be damaged by smoke and soot in nearby buildings:

  • Ceilings
  • Walls
  • Windows

Although outside building smoke damage is often expected from a nearby fire, the broken windows, stained inside walls, and soot-covered interior are generally a surprise. In fact, smoke and soot can be carried for miles in even a gentle breeze, leading to massive areas of soot damage from even the smallest of commercial building fires.

Four Ways To Prevent Water Damage When Your Business Is Closed

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

Unless your business is open 24 hours a day, you may not have someone on premises at all times. This puts your business at an increased risk from water damage, because if a broken pipe starts leaking water in the middle of the night, it will do a lot of damage before someone arrives in the morning. What should have been a simple water pipe repair is now an expensive visit from a water mitigation company. The good news is there are things you can do to protect your business from water damage when it’s closed.

1. Inspect Your Roof.

The most common cause of water damage is a leaking roof. This is doubly true if you live somewhere that experiences storms with high winds, hail or sub-zero temperatures. Especially if your roof is getting older, regular inspections to make sure it isn’t leaking can save you big time in the long run.

2. Keep Your Equipment in Good Repair.

If your business utilizes appliances that use water, make sure you keep them in good repair. Air conditioners, water heaters, ice machines, dishwashers and washing machines are all likely sources of water damage. Have them inspected regularly to replace filters and gaskets.

3. Update Your Plumbing.

Everyone knows they should deal with a water pipe repair quickly to prevent damage, but you should also take a look at the supply lines in your building. Are they rigid plastic or vinyl? If so, they’re at a higher risk of failure than other types of supply lines. Ask your plumber to upgrade to flexible, braided supply lines. These are more reliable and they’ll last longer.

4. Install Water Sensors.

New water sensor technologies can detect leaks and burst pipes, alert you to the problem and shut off the main water supply in your building to prevent a simple water pipe repair from ballooning into a visit from SERVPRO of River Oaks. If you’re worried about your business becoming flooded, consider installing one of these new smart sensor systems to protect your business.

Why choose Professional Damage Restoration?

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

According to the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) there are a couple of reasons to choose a professional over doing it yourself. Below are a few reasons:

  • The process of fire and water restoration is very involved when it is performed properly.
  • With quick reaction time and the appropriate skill set, a technician can help to prevent further damage and repair that which has already been done
  • The process and equipment used during fire and water restoration will vary from case to case, since different materials require their own unique care
  • For fire damage, general cleaning is done to remove ash and soot from ceiling to floor
  • The quick remediation of the problem is important for more than repairs, it is also a health consideration
  • Choose a company for fire and water restoration with the appropriate licenses and proof that they have the proper insurance.
  • Whether the work to be done is in a commercial or residential location, technicians with experience and certification should perform the damage recovery.

Sprinkler Head Floods Senior Living Facility in Houston's Historic Third Ward

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

Buckled ceiling caused by a busted sprinkler head.

A faulty sprinkler head can cause major water damage when it goes off unexpectedly. SERVPRO of River Oaks was recently called out to clean up water damage from a faulty sprinkler head that ran for over 2 hours before maintenance could enter the affected unit of 4 story Senior Living Facility in Houston's Historic Third Ward district. The water cascaded down 4 floors and affected 4 entire units.

A sprinkler system houses pressurized water and can dump as much as 150 gallons of water per minute. Over a two hour period, the sprinkler system dumped in excess of 18,000 gallons of water that flooded 4 units.

SERVPRO of River Oaks dispatched crews to immediately begin the extraction, cleanup, restoration and drying processes in each unit. Carpet, drywall, insulation, and furniture were all affected from the water. Crews worked during the evening to help minimize the damage and begin the drying process. All together, 7 dehumidifiers and over 50 turbo high velocity air movers were used and the units were dried in 5 days. The owner was thrilled at the quick response and professionalism of the SERVPRO crews. "We had a previous sprinkler incident that was handled in-house, and took way too long to dry. SERVPRO came out and did what they said they would do, set a plan in motion, and followed the plan to perfection."

Restoring 1928 Ceramic Tile Flooring in Downtown Houston Church

3/13/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO employee Odilon Benitez using the rotary floor scrubbing machine to clean 1928 ceramic tile flooring during church renovation.

During the renovations of a downtown Houston church, the church discovered the original 1928 ceramic tile that had been covered over with carpet for many years. SERVPRO of River Oaks was brought in to see if the tile could be salvaged, as opposed to having to be torn out and adding another floor covering. The tile was completely covered with old carpet glues and construction debris from the renovation work.

David Johnson, owner of SERVPRO of River Oaks, did a test clean on the tile to see if the glue could be removed completely without damaging the tiles. The construction manager was amazed that SERVPRO was able to remove the glue, and amazed at how good the test clean came out. SERVPRO then brought in its crew to completely strip the tile of the carpet glues, which required the use of a proprietary glue remover, the use of floor stripping blades, a rotary floor scrubbing machine, and a truck mounted extraction and cleaning unit. Once the floor was cleaned, SERVPRO applied a protective coating on the floor the bring out the natural shine of the ceramic tile. Being able to restore the tile back to its original beauty was a wonderful feeling and SERVPRO was proud to have been a part of the renovations.
